Terror group claims responsibility for incidents in Oslo:
A terror group, Ansar al-Jihad al-Alami, or the Helpers of the Global Jihad, issued a statement claiming responsibility for the attack, according to Will McCants, a terrorism analyst at C.N.A., a research institute that studies terrorism. The message said the attack was a response to Norwegian forces’ presence in Afghanistan and to unspecified insults to the Prophet Muhammad. “We have warned since the Stockholm raid of more operations,” the group said, according to Mr. McCants’ translation, apparently referred to a bombing in Sweden in December 2010. “What you see is only the beginning, and there is more to come.” The claim could not be confirmed.

Norway is a member of the NATO alliance and has a small fighting contingent in Afghanistan. It was one of several countries named by Ayman al-Zawahri, the Al Qaeda leader, as potential targets for attack. In 2006, Norwegian newspapers reprinted Danish cartoons that angered Muslims by lampooning Muhammad. Norway has also historically been a frequent participant in peacekeeping missions and a host for diplomatic talks, including the 1993 Oslo Accords between Israel and the Palestinians. The Nobel Peace Prize is awarded by a committee of the Norwegian parliament.

2. I have an idea. Every nation on earth, every organization, and every individual
needs to vocally and pointedly insult Muhammed. Then the islamic terrorists who get their panties in a wad over perceived slights won't know WHO the hell to attack.

 It could work.

5. That is exactly what needs to be done. As these despicable acts continue
Mo is going to get less and less respect. He'll soon be on par with Boosh. What irony.

12. Has it occurred to you that perhaps nobody profits from it? Maybe it's just a stupid, violent act.

An inappropriately intense act of retribution to a real or perceived slight.

13. People don't always do things which profit them.
For example, look at the Nader 2000 voters.

17. I don't see that "profit" has to have anything to do with terrorism.
Sometimes its just radical religionists who take offense, or it's a revenge act.

Why does this have to have a profit motive? I'm guessing the 9/11 terrorists - the ones who actually perpetuated the act weren't motivated by money. It was idealogical. Radicalized religious mania.

now who profited at the top, the string-pullers is a whole different kettle of fish....

I wonder if amongst the murdered children there is an important family linked....

18. If the gunman is part of an Islamic terrorist group than their choosing to massacre
youth associated to the Labor Party is mind boggling given that the Labor has sought to accomodate Muslims.

The following 2009 article from the BBC about growing anti-Muslim sentiment in Norway is interesting.

21. Claim apparently withdrawn
5.14am Earlier reports across media that a group called 'Helpers of Islamic Jihad' had claimed responsibility for the attacks seem to be wrong.

Analyst Will McCants posted the original claim, made by Abu Sulayman al-Nasir on Arabic jihadi forum 'Shmukh'. He then issued an update, telling news.com.au the original claim was "not real".

Update: Abu Sulayman has now issued a retraction, stating clearly that “Helpers” was not involved in the operation and that his statement was not an official statement. He says those who carried out the attacks “must surely be known to all.”
