The recent debt fight has given us as Democrats an ideal basis to convince our fellow citizens that Republicans are not serious about the things they say they were concerned about.
1. Republicans won in 2010 by saying they were concerned about the debt. However, the debt fight shows that they were more interested in protecting tax breaks to the rich, then trying to cut the deficit. Worse, they did not want to really make Medicare or Social Security solvent, but "fundamentally" change them into a voucher program (Ryan plan) and a 401(k) plan (Bush Social Security "reforrm"), thus they walked away from cuts in exchange for mild tax increases.
2. Republicans were elected in 2010 by claiming that Democrats were pro-bank for voting for TARP funding, but then they attempted to block financial reform, and even now are trying to water it down.
3. Republicans opposed cutting tax breaks to oil companies even in the wake of record oil company profits, and the Gulf Oil Spill that was cleaned up at the cost of billions of taxpayer money.
4. Republican governors used the recession as an excuse to disenfrancise workers and roll back collective bargaining rights as Governor Scott Walker did in Wisconsin and Rick Scott did in Florida.
5. Finally, Republicans promised jobs, and instead focused on efforts to turn Medicare into a voucher program, and cut trillions in government programs to the most needy while protecting tax breaks to the rich and powerful. Where is the shared sacrifice? Where are the Republican efforts to fight unemployment? Too the contrary, Republicans are trying to make our economy worse for political gain.
Put another way, Republicans have revealed themselves to be ideological extremists who are out of touch with most Americans even those who may identify as Republicans. Even a majority of Republicans favor an approach to deficit reduction with some tax increases, as well as spending cuts.
The reason why we are even having some of the discussions we are having is because extreme right wing Republicans took over the House in 2010. Prior to this year, our economy was recovering despite strident efforts by Republicans to stop any progress in Congress. But, with the Tea Party caucas controlling the Republicans in Congress, all we have are lies and rhetoric about cutting the deficit when President Obama's effors to meet them half way demonstrates that Republicans have no real interest in cutting the debt. They just want to shrink government, and the services it provides, until it is so small that you can drown it.
Republicans won in 2010, and our Nation's recovery turned right back into a recession, as Republicans abused their positions to hold the entire nation hostage for an extremist agenda.
The only way to return to recovery is to make sure we fight for Democrats and win in 2012!
