FAA furloughs 4,000 workers after funding expires, congressional 'inaction'
By Pete Kasperowicz and Jamie Klatell - 07/23/11 07:03 AM ET

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) partially shut down Saturday, as Congress failed to reauthorize the agency's funding.

“I’m very disappointed that Congress adjourned today without passing a clean extension of the FAA bill," Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood said in a Friday statement. “Because of their inaction, states and airports won’t be able to work on their construction projects, and too many people will have to go without a paycheck. This is no way to run the best aviation system in the world.”

About 4,000 FAA employees are now furloughed without pay, according to the FAA, as the Senate on Friday failed to approve a controversial House-passed extension of taxes that help fund the FAA.

“The FAA employees who will be furloughed perform critical work for our nation’s aviation system and our economy,” FAA Administrator Randy Babbitt said in a statement. “These are real people with families who do not deserve to be put out of work during these tough economic times.”

And three insignificant airports across the country closed. "Next. . . .?"

Damn our supine media.

3. Why yes...
...the gummint takes your money, that you earned (H/T Stephen Colbert) and gives it to people who don't look like you, don't sound like you, that you've never met and don't know, and who worship either the wrong God, or the right God in the wrong way, or don't worship anybody.

That's what governments do.

What governments are supposed to do is bomb the bejeezus out of brown people who worship the wrong God, and give their cronies' getaway car a nice police escort en route to the Caymans.

2. Just as long as corporate jets are shut down first
No clearances, no flight plans, no weather, no air traffic control, nada. Let Mr. CEO drive to where he wants to go.

4. This is BS!
Invoke the 14th amendment, Geithner needs to make the payments and let the Repukes try and challenge this. Make it a 2012 election issue about how the R's were willing to destroy the economy, shut down the government and slash Medicare, SSI and Medicaid and refuse to increase taxes to decrease the deficit. Use the bully pulpit in service of the people instead of in service of RW talking points.

5. This is not debt-ceiling related...
...this is hung up on a.) subsidized mandated service to small markets, b.) flight slots at DCA/Washington National, and c.) collective bargaining by FAA employees.

Separate disgrace this time....same GOP though.

6. Totally not connected to the debt limit issue and not even close to the
most strained arguments for the 14th Amendment solution, which is if congress has appropriated the money then that scheduled expenditure is a valid debt that needs to be paid. The FAA is shutting down because there is no appropriated money for it.

10. Last time, Reagan fired them all
It was the beginning of the end of the war on labor. With labor losing like the British at Dunkirk.
