There but for the grace of God, as the saying goes.

I lost far too many friends to drugs at a young age, and others to health issues beyond their control. How I have made it to my 6th decade, I don't know.

What talents. I recommend this one to you: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ORFqyVl9t_8&feature=share

10. Really? Says no-one in the industry, where she is UNIVERSALLY praised as a genius talent.
Edited on Sun Jul-24-11 05:19 PM by WinkyDink
Or are you just someone who has heard the word "Rehab" and doesn't know any other of her songs?
Or her UK record of 5 Grammys in one year?

Hendix had three studio albums: Are You Experienced? - Axis; Bold as Love - Electric Ladyland.
Nirvana had 3 studio albums: Bleach - Nevermind - In Utero.
Janis had 4: Big Brother & the Holding Company · Cheap Thrills · I Got Dem Ol' Kozmic Blues Again Mama! · Pearl.

Amy had 2 studio albums (Frank and Back to Black) and was working on her third.

Not exactly a major difference for which to denigrate Amy.

13. Everyone has their preferences...
It was hard for me to see Kurt Cobaine put in the same league as Jimi, Janis, Jim, but he had his share of committed and devastated fans (who will undoubtedly flame me for that, but there you go...)

That said, they all certainly left a lot of potential on the table. That, I think we can all agree, is extremely sad.

"Annoying" is not exactly a reason either to include or exclude an artist from the ranks of "genius."

20. By whose standards? Five Grammys would argue the point. Not to mention the opinions of LEGENDS:
Tony Bennett recorded with her. In a statement to Us Weekly, the legendary singer calls his late friend "an artist of immense proportions. I am deeply saddened to learn of her tragic passing."

.."She was an extraordinary musician with a rare intuition as a vocalist and I am truly devastated that her exceptional talent and has come to such an early end," Bennett continues. "She was a lovely and intelligent person and when we recorded together she gave a soulful and extraordinary performance."
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Elton John: "Sir Elton John called her ‘a seminal artist’, adding: ‘She was one of the greatest artists this country has ever produced.’"
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Other opinions:
http://www.cnn.com/2011/OPINION/07/23/seymour.winehouse/

"Once in a lifetime talent:
http://www.mercurynews.com/breaking-news/ci_18537315

"Winehouse's legacy will live on – no doubt she has been one of the most important figures in pop music this millennium."

16. RIP to all of these people....but this "27 club" thing has really gone out of control.
Really it's about 3 people - Jimi, Janis, and Jim Morrison - because they all died at 27 within a year of each other and were some of the biggest names in entertainment at the time.

Now, people try to throw everyone and their Mom in that category when much more famous people have died well before and well after 27 years old. I think Amy Winehouse was a great singer and songwriter but she's nowhere near the caliber as those others are, they're legendary. RIP Amy and everyone else but this "27 club" thing is getting ridiculous.

18. A modest proposal...
Edited on Sun Jul-24-11 05:29 PM by ScreamingMeemie
I suggest that we no longer allow talented artists to turn 27. Upon the day of what would have been their 27th birthday, I suggest we bump them forward to 28. Problem solved, much as most elevators do not stop at a 13th floor. It's genius.

The loss of these artists is sad and tragic for our country, but you could pull up the age, say...35, and find many artists who left us at that age. It's a little bit silly if you ask me.

Edited to add: http://www.star-daze.com/death_age/35.html

Ronald C. "Pigpen" McKernan (September 8, 1945 – March 8, 1973) was a founding member of the Grateful Dead. His contributions to the band included vocals, Hammond organ, harmonica, percussion, and occasionally guitar.

He also had a relationship with Janis.
