You know what really pisses me off in debates?
When people assume because I'm young I'm naive or stupid. This mainly comes from conservatives though I've seen it from the Left on rare occasions. I was just debating the merits of tarries vs. free trade with a very conservative poster and after his arguments he says "and lastly how old are you?" You know maybe I should start saying all old people are bigoted and close minded and ignorant because I've met some who are and that is a stereotype, oh wait that would be intellectually dishonest and despite how young I am I try to avoid that. Sorry for the rant it just annoys me when I hear stuff like that.

1. did he do that after you had debated him and it was his part of the argument?
if so then I would consider it a compliment. It means that you won the argument. He had to attack your age because he had nothing to argue with you about.

2. It was the last part of his argument.
Paragraph one contained his defense of free trade and the "job creators" and down below he asked how old I was.

5. the purpose is to belittle you. it is intentional. to make you feel insecure.
or to make him feel better about himself because he feels old standing next to you.

3. Discrimination based on age does not only happen to the old
it happens all the time to the young as well. Every time you don't get hired because "you don't have enough experience" it means your to young and I think your not going to do a good job. It happens to me all the time, and it probably pisses me off more then anything else that happen.

4. Well, don't take it personally. There are many uninvolved, uneducated, not-interested in politics
young people in this country. One would think that once you begin your debate, they know you're not naive or stupid. There are people who think adults are naive and stupid when the adult doesn't agree with them. Just last night, here on DU, I was called naive because I don't believe all White people are inherently racist and hate African Americans. I'm 56 and as far from naive as one gets. Let it roll off. They're the naive and stupid one if they throw that at you. They're just trying to make themselves look better after being whooped by a younger person. ;)
