Coburn (Coburn!!): "We can reduce spending without touching entitlement benefits."
Of course he prefaced it with "It's not a revenue problem, it's a spending problem", but still!

Apparently THEY have heard their constituents and read the polls. Have WE?

This was on the news on the radio, just a clip, and I think it was from a Sunday talk show.

If HE can come out and say that, why haven't WE?

:grr: Now they'll put it all on us, of course, and frankly, we deserve it. Well, our "representatives" in Washington do!

1. You Do Know That Coburn Is The Biggest Proponent Of Cutting Medicare Now...
...Not sometime in the future. Right now. This is why he left the Gang of Six originally. Because he did not think it was cutting Medicare fast enough.

Seriously, it is amazing how often "liberals" give Republicans a free pass. Coburn is perhaps one of the most extreme proponents of cutting entitlements out there.

2. Yes, I'm aware of that, and really, am I giving him a "free pass"?
My comment, simply, and the point, is why did a Republican say that, and not a Democrat?

5. as people here are fond of saying: talk is cheap

Ok, so assuming he's trying to cover his ass, how does he actually propose to do this? Does he actually have a plan? Does this plan involve some typical republican idea of cost-savings through privatization?

I agree with your point that the Democrats really ought to be pushing this message and are in danger of being out-maneuvered by the GOP once again. It's maddening how bad our politicians are at this... It's even more maddening though that people actually fall for the GOP's framing of the issue, given how out of touch with reality it usually is....

6. I don't care if he's just trying to cover his ass, or if he has a plan.
All that matters is the sound bite, and they are masters at that. If this becomes widespread and we begin hearing it every time they open their lying mouths, the cry of "Republicans didn't want to touch your Social Security - Obama did!" will be what we'll heard endlessly.

We are dealing with the most vile group of people I've ever observed. I am truly horrified by their behavior.

3. probably because of republican magical thinking...
of the same variety in which lowering taxes actually increases revenues...

7. He probably has in mind abolishing all the programs on the RW hit list.
No EPA, no Department of Education, no food stamps, no foreign aid (except military aid), etc.
