There were no road closures or evacuations as a result of the accident. “Cleanup and mitigation is continuing and it’s being monitored,” said Holley Wade, a spokesperson for the Hillsborough County Office of Emergency Management, in an interview Sunday night, July 24. “As far as environmental impact, we still don’t know. We are waiting for those tests to come back.” The leak was first reported at 7:45 p.m. July 22 along the pipeline which carries jet and diesel fuel to Orlando. The leak was stopped July 23 at about 9 p.m. and Central Florida Pipeline, which
operates the pipeline, began pumping the product out of the line Sunday morning at about 10:30 a.m. The company is using booms and other containment equipment to contain the product and ensure that it does not impact the Tampa Bypass Canal. Federal and state investigators are still trying to determine what caused the leak. “The clean-up is ongoing now after the leak of 31,500 gallons of jet fuel,” said Ana Gibbs, a spokesperson for the Florida Department of Environmental Protection, also in an interview Sunday night. The leak has federal, state and county officials working together with representatives from federal Environmental Protection Agency, Florida Department of Environmental Protection, Florida Division of Emergency Management as well as Hillsborough County Fire Rescue and the Hillsborough County Office of Emergency Management all on the scene. The federal Department of Transportation Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration representative
is also investigating the cause of the breach of the pipe. They will also be reviewing Central Florida Pipeline's repair and restart plan.
