That would be during the campaign, I guess. Since assuming office?

Not so much.

6. I'm not sure we disagree. They are definitely smack-addicts when it comes to elitist coin
That said, I still remember when we had, well, "hope." For a nanosecond or three.

20. Been a long time since the country heard of hope. He could have appealed more the populace, BUT
his point in the speech was to speak to the Freshmen congressmen/women and by extension to the American people. FDR ignored Congress in his fireside speeches and spoke to his people. Hence his appeal for 4 terms. Bear in mind that as a black representative, that would definably break new ground.

So we shall see what we shall see.

32. No this is not an FDR age. This is both chartered and unchartered territory.
The repub's are pushing as hard as they can to see how far they can get. Not new in the history if the US. However this approach has always failed and it will fail again. Sadly, not b/f people needlessly suffer.

Buckle up. No one will be unaffected by a default.

3. Right now what would be uplifting is
to raise the debt ceiling. Pun intended. His focus was to get that done by putting heat on the the other side.

17. In negotiations, there is a time to be aggressive,
and there is a time to finesse. As we have tested the other side and find them to be intractable and irrational when the stakes are so critically high.
Finesse is the remaining option. I think that was what Obama was wisely doing. I think he overreached with his grand bargain. At this point, Reid's plan
would be the best we can get. It is pitiful that is all, but that is all. And even that is in question now.

Hope that we can finesse around these loonies. We have to somehow get to then next election to have a chance to clear out the crazies.

you seem to be stuck on the rainbows/ponies notion of the thing.

Sometimes, it's just being willing to fight for a belief.

13. This wasn't meant to be uplifting but to express frustration and ask for help persuading
the repubs who simply vote No for anything a Dem or Pres Obama proposes. How could this be "uplifting"? Serious question.

14. Quite seriously, I suppose it depends how one defines "uplifting"
for many, an emphasis on jobs, or a clear-cut stance protecting Social Security -- while taking the fight to the Repubbies -- would be "uplifting."

It's odd that so many here don't see sticking by a set of principles as "uplifting." Especially in terms of those who gave so much to see a particular person assume the reins of (presumed) "power.."

30. Sigh.....
The PResident was speaking in short sentences,
with five letter words, and concrete images.

He was speaking to those who are NOT his constituency,
those who are probably tea-bag friendly...

Those who were NOT listening to him,

But waiting with bated breath for the words of Boehner of Orange's lies...

I find it offensive with I am 'talked down to...'
as I was recently by the president who knows better.

41. Give it a break
That was before the housing bubble and the banks almost failing and having to be bailed out. It was before the only word the Republicans could say was a categorical NO! it was before the teabaggers started disrupting everything and Republicans falling all over themselves to yell Liar! or to out and out lie to every American, including their darling teabaggers. That was when we all thought there might be some actual grown up dialog between the President and Republicans.

It's really convenient to have such a selective memory.
