NAACP calls for an end to the war on drugs
Source: Raw Story
By David Edwards

The National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) is officially calling on the U.S. government to end the war on drugs.

A majority of NAACP delegates at their annual convention in Los Angeles Tuesday voted to pass a resolution titled: "A Call to End the War on Drugs, Allocate Funding to Investigate Substance Abuse Treatment, Education, and Opportunities in Communities of Color for A Better Tomorrow."

"Today the NAACP has taken a major step towards equity, justice and effective law enforcement," NAACP president and CEO Benjamin Jealous said in a press advisory. "These flawed drug policies that have been mostly enforced in African American communities must be stopped and replaced with evidenced-based practices that address the root causes of drug use and abuse in America."

The resolution noted that African Americans are 13 times more likely to be sentenced to jail than whites facing the same drug charges.

2. Thay's all well and good, but
what they should be doing is, trying to get the DOJ involved to stop the voter suppression being carried out in several States...some of which ARE NOT IN THE SOUTH. :evilfrown:

11. Suppression of African Americans comes in a number of forms...
and the W.O.D. is one of the biggest "success stories" for those who do the suppression. The W.O.D. and its end cannot be divided from voter suppression: It is part and parcel of it.

You CANNOT end the W.O.D. (and the suppression of blacks, Hispanics and poor whites) without legalization/regulation.

If we ... oh fuck it. This whole insane heads-up-the-ass drug worrier domination of our national policies makes me want to puke.

Time for dinner, and to forget about the hopey, changy chameleon who's lost my vote, and the votes of everyone I know.

9. great news!
if you look at this issue in terms of cost/benefit to society, the costs far outweigh the benefits to our culture, our medicine and our practice of democracy.

10. The source says nothing about "legalization/regulation"...
It's one thing to say "end the W.O.D.;" another to recommend a legalization/regulation strategy.

One CANNOT exist without the other. That said, the W.O.D. has done more to cripple and control African-Americans, Hispanics and poor whites than any other social control policy. It would make Theodore Bilbo wiggle in ecstasy, and it has been supported by both parties and all presidents since the W.O.D. was nationalized in the mid-teens. In the last 25 years, the W.O.D. has allowed vast quantities of loud-mouthed right-wing extremists to be elected on the cheap, by cowing down Democrats until they, too, support the W.O.D. with enthusiasm, or with the meaningless caveat: "We need to emphasize more treatment," and other such crap.

Again, you CANNOT end the W.O.D. without legalization/regulation. You CANNOT.

21. In other news,
Obama inferentially told the NAACP to go shove it. He and his DOJ have people to incarcerate.
