PETA exhibit contrasts slavery, genocide with animal cruelty
Source: Raw Story
By Stephen C. Webster

A new exhibit on the National Mall in Washington, D.C. is raising eyebrows for its contrast of slavery, genocide and animal cruelty.

The display, placed by activist group People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA), appears to be a new take on a 2005 PETA campaign that compared slavery and the torture and lynching of black people to animal slaughterhouses -- a display so controversial that PETA was eventually compelled by black activists to remove it.

The new exhibit is a bit more varied than the widely condemned 'Animal Liberation Project" in 2005, which asked viewers, "Are animals the new slaves?" That was enough to trigger a strong condemnation from the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP), which accused PETA of using black people for political gain.

When asked how she would respond to people who object to PETA's analogy, Ingrid Newkirk, the group's president and cofounder, told Raw Story that she was not clear which analogy was in question.

"Do you mean, like the Animal Liberation Project?" she asked. "Or something else?"

1. Those who view humans and other animals as equals will agree,
those who don't view humans and other animals won't agree.

That is my guess.

7. but they are not comparing animals to ALL humans
only to African Americans.

All analogies are flawed and some are flawed AND insulting. They should make their case without such analogies.

8. They have done other types of people as well, such as those who suffered in the holocaust.
I agree all analogies are flawed, otherwise they wouldn't be analogies.

Just about everything is insulting to someone, so I agree analogies can be insulting too. I don't blame people for feeling insulted for this analogy.

2. Yeah, I remember the '05 project
I knew a few higher-ups at PETA at the time, and let them know they were crossing a line...

3. I'm all for treating animals humanely and more compassion.
I eat meat. I can't help it.

I kinda think PETA crosses the line with some of their campaigns, however.

4. +1
And they have crossed the line so many times and so egregiously at times that I completely ignore them.

9. Fallacious thinking on your part.
The belief humans are equal to non-human animals is not racism.

6. I've always seen their campaigns as a way to fire up their supporters for fund raising
More than any real effort to change animal conditions.

If the fund raising is their intent, then being outrageous, getting on the news, and getting their donors fired up is a great strategy.

If changing people's minds is their intent, then they must be really stupid.

They aren't stupid, so view these as fund raising events.

11. So I don't want to think of my dog, cat and fish as slaves
Should I and millions of other households set our collective pets free?

As for slave labor..not more horse back riding or buggy pulling for the Quakers, no more oxen for tilling the earth in 3rd world countries. Interesting idea...not

12. Unfortunately, I think PETA
is a little crazy. And it tends to be one of the organizations the right-wingers use to stereotype those "crazy, bleeding heart liberals."

Humane treatment of animals is good... but we can't expect people to stop eating them, and we shouldn't compare them to humans.
