Democrats see wiggle room on Obama’s Aug. 2 debt-limit deadline

Democrats see wiggle room on Obama’s Aug. 2 debt-limit deadline
By Alexander Bolton - 07/27/11 08:56 PM ET

The Aug. 2 deadline for raising the nation’s debt ceiling might not be as rigid a cutoff date as the administration has been saying, according to some senior Senate Democrats.

Senate Democrats, in the midst of stalemated negotiations, acknowledge there might be some flexibility with the deadline Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner has set for raising the national debt limit.

While administration officials have insisted there is no wiggle room beyond Tuesday, some senior Democrats say the economy will not necessarily come crashing down immediately.

Analyses by Barclays and UBS suggest a national default could be pushed back until Aug. 8 or Aug. 10 because the federal government has received a higher flow of tax revenues than it had earlier anticipated.

1. There is no WIGGLE room for a doubtful, nervous people!
This is utter nonsense. Do you think this moving of the deadline does anything but to reinforce some of the tpartiers are saying: there is no debt crisis. We all know this is a manufactured crisis, but who is doing the manufacturing. How do people believe someone who keeps moving the goal line?? This just makes the dems look like the repugs. SO WHO CAN YOU TRUST??

2. Admin probably not happy to see 'wiggle room' publicly.
as to inevestors refusing to panic, market's been down last 3 days, Monday 88? points, Tuesday 9? points, Wednesday 10? points. May not be called 'panic,' but surely some adverse effect.

3. Damn - why are we supposed to believe anything government officials tell us?
Back in April, the President said he didn't expect to get a clean debt ceiling bill:

Peter Schroeder - 04/15/11 04:46 PM ET...But in a Friday interview, the president said he expects some spending cuts to be part of the deal, seemingly changing the administration's stance in the negotiations.

"I think it's absolutely right that it's not going to happen without some spending cuts," he said in an interview with The Associated Press.

This latest wiggle room dance gives the President another week to get the spending cuts he wants, along with "read my lips, no new taxes!"

5. Elderly poor seniors and veterans who have been primed and bracing
for benefits not going out in few days might be grateful for news of a little wiggle room.
