I used to be a property manager of a small apt complex...and our UPS guy was named CHESTER
He was a funny little chap, this Chester. And although he wore a name tag each day that said he was Chester, he would try to insist that we call him Steve or Bo. When anyone in the office did this, he would linger a bit too long for anyone's comfort, and one day i just decided that I was going to call him his real name instead of what he said he wanted to be called. EVERY TIME I called him Chester, he would try to tell me to call him Steve or Bo. I would ask why his name tag didn't say that and he would reply that his name tag is his name, but he wants to be called Steve or Bo. I finally told him I would get him a name tag that said Steve or Bo if he wanted, but he was getting called whatever his nametag said.

Such in the case with the Tea Baggers. THEY called themselves Tea Baggers. They should have thought about it and didn't, so why should we allow them to reframe their own identity? I bet that had more lefties demand that they not be able to reframe themselves when they looked foolish, they would not be so much of a threat.

Ask yourself...had the left done the same with a party movement, would THEY have allowed us to call ourselves any different? HELL NO!!!

So why is it happening here?

1. I am in total agreement... They called themselves teabaggers

originally and even wore teabags around their heads as their symbol. So, that is what I will forever call them.

Ironically, CBS bleeped Bill Maher when he referred to them as teabaggers on Letterman. Since when is "teabag" a bad word (despite any secondary slang meanings)... Watch out Lipton. Your product is no longer "family" friendly, it seems. :eyes:

3. I still remember the original post at the Free Republic where someone suggested they be 'Teabaggers'
The first few replies were like 'woohoo what a fun idea!' until someone finally googled teabagging and realized what the term meant.

And honestly , these teabaggers are just that - they kneel in front of 2% of the country that is fabulously wealthy thinking if they suckle the balls of these rich people that somehow, someway they'll become wealthy too. What they don't realize is when the wealthy get what they want they will toss these teabaggers to the curb and toss them $10 for services rendered.

5. I still think it was an inside joke by a Log Cabin Republican
working for the political consulting firm that the insurance companies hired to create an astroturf front to oppose health care reform.

The fact that they swallowed it whole without realizing what it meant shows not only how dumb and gullible they are, but also how phony and artificial.

6. An individual gets to be called by the name they wish.
But a Republican is just a Republican, there is no synonym that is acceptable in polite company. There is not such thing as the Tea Party. In the House, there are just Democrats and Republicans, not one single member of a Tea Party. No such Party exists.
I'd call Chester Bo or Steve or call Archie Cary Grant, don't care. But a Republican is a Republican.

7. They call us the Democrat party not the Democratic party.
Why shouldn't we call them Teabaggers, it's a perfect name, everytime I hear it I think of saggy balled bigoted rich old white men.

10. I'm tired of them co-opting the entire American English language...
for the last three decades.

There's been a concerted effort to demonize words and turn everything upside down.

Greed is good. Cut-throat competition is good. Selfishness is good. "What's mine is mine" is good. "Life isn't fair" is good. Bootstrap thinking, yada, yada.

But use -- and live -- these words and you're a weak, unpatriotic wuss:

Progressive

Liberal

Compassion

Empathy

Cooperation

The Common Good

Community organizer...community anything

They've basically tried to make words that describe the better angels of our nature as being negative.

And they've largely succeeded.

Not any more. We need to OWN THOSE WORDS.

We need to write a new story going forward. Too many are trying to rewrite history; let's not allow them to create the future.
