Tobacco Chiefs Say Cigarettes Aren't Addictive

By PHILIP J. HILTS
Published: April 15, 1994
Correction Appended

The top executives of the seven largest American tobacco companies testified in Congress today that they did not believe that cigarettes were addictive, but that they would rather their own children did not smoke. snip

The executives also made a number of other notable admissions, including these:

*Cigarettes may cause lung cancer, heart disease and other health problems, but the evidence is not conclusive.

-------------------------------

Anyone else remember when this happened? They got in front of the entire world and lied right through their teeth. For money mind you. A pieces of gold.

1. I remember, clearly.
I was a smoker at the time, the "addictive"issue was front and center.
But even MORE memorable was a few years later when Phillip Morris publicly admitted they had been deliberately adding increased nicotine to their cigs!
I got so mad I quick smoking, for the 3rd and last time.

I also learned that when Congress holds hearings, it is mostly for show.
Then again, anyone who listened to McCarthy's hearings knew that.

3. In the spring of 1997 one of the big cigarette companies
admitted targeting under 18's with their ads in order to get life long clients. That was the day i quit smoking, i was about to light up when i heard that on the news radio and i threw my cigs out the window.

2. Yes, they lied. There is a mountain of evidence against them,
and we watch other corporate parties do it everyday as well. The reason - profit. What is at the base of all of this and encourages this behavior? That's right: Capitalism.
