Republic - we vote for people who vote for us

Democracy - we have direct elections and the people decide

Years ago, my NH brother told me how they had direct elections for such things as the town budget where all voters got to decide what was funded by their town rather than the elected town officials. He said that sometimes it was kind of a zoo because people would be arguing on how much went to e.g. the Police Department and how much went to each of the other funded area but that he enjoyed it because it gave everyone got a chance to argue their point before voting.
