I grew up in Tampa, and one morning in 1980 I got up, turned on the TV and the Sunshine Skyway had been hit by a tanker with one whole middle section collapsed. It happened in the early morning, rush hour traffic was just beginning. I think about 40 people died. There's a picture out there of a car with its front tires at the edge of the pavement of the remaining bridge, about to fall into the gaping maw of the collapsed section. Makes my palms sweat to even think about it. The Skyway didn't collapse as completely as this bridge did, though. Thank goodness it was so early in the morning.
The first picture at the article is that photo. My memory was that it was hanging off the edge, but it's not.
