(4,910 posts)I moved to Tampa in the mid-1980s from the Keys, so driving over long bridges was nothing new to me. That said, I only drove over the old Skyway bridge once on a clear day, and for me that was a white knuckle ride. It rekindled memories of going over the old Bahia Honda bridge in the Keys before it was replaced in the mid 1970s (that raised bridge was part of Flagler's original Overseas Railroad). I used to plaster myself on the floorboard of the car my parents were driving when we went over the old Bahia Honda. Even going over the new Skyway bridge today gives me a small jolt of anxiety.
I saw the accident scene for the Key Bridge, and notice there were only a couple of dolphins (groups of concrete pilings, not the mammal) protecting the stanchions. I'm guessing when they build the replacement bridge, concrete dolphins will be put those in place to ensure another collision does not happen.
