Cass Review author says leading medical org only supports trans health care under "political duress"

Cass Review author says leading medical org only supports trans health care under “political duress”
In a recent interview, Dr. Hilary Cass also ignored the many critiques of so-called rapid onset gender dysphoria.
By Mira Lazine Monday, May 13, 2024

In an interview with Azeen Ghorayshi of the New York Times published earlier today, Dr. Hilary Cass – lead author on the highly controversial Cass Review examining gender-affirming care for trans youth – took a “both sides” approach as to whether social acceptance or the widely discredited theory of ‘social contagion’ causes people to come out as trans.

“Social acceptance just doesn’t happen that way, so dramatically,” Cass told the Times. “So that doesn’t make sense as the full answer. But equally, those who say this is just social contagion are also not taking account of how complex and nuanced this is.”

She went on to say that “it only becomes a challenge if we’re medicalizing [gender], giving an irreversible treatment, for what might be just a normal range of gender expression.”

The social contagion concept refers to the debunked concept of rapid-onset gender dysphoria (ROGD), a hypothesis originally promoted by Lisa Littman, who has since had her initial study on the topic retracted.

There is no evidence for ROGD, and the only advocates for it are notable anti-trans activists.

[...]

Cass also dismissed the position of expert organizations like the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP), claiming that it is a “fairly left-leaning” organization and is politically motivated in what it chooses to support. The AAP is the leading medical organization for pediatricians in America, comprising over 67,000 doctors. It has previously advocated for mask mandates and vaccines and has argued for the safety of abortions.

JK Rowling at it again this time being Racist as well...

It seems like not a day goes by without JK Rowling saying something profoundly bigoted. Apparently not content with misgending a trans journalist or engaging in Holocaust denialism of trans victims of Nazi hate, has decided to outright bully a transgender referee... who never did anything to nor said anything about Ms Rowling at all.

Yep that is right, is harrassing a trans woman for no reason what-so-ever other than to bully her.

Cruel JK Rowling calls trans soccer official a “crossdressing straight man” for no reason
The wealthy author with millions of followers said it's not "punching down" to lash out at a relatively obscure trans woman.
By Molly Sprayregen Monday, May 13, 2024

The latest target of J.K. Rowling’s increasingly vicious transphobia is a history-making trans soccer official who did nothing to Rowling that could have provoked the tirade.

Lucy Clark became the first ou trans soccer referee in the world when she was hired to call games for England women’s soccer’s third tier. This year, she made history again by becoming the first out trans manager in the history of competitive English soccer when she was hired to manage Sutton United.

Rowling responded to a now-deleted post from an LGBTQ+ nonprofit praising Clark and implied she was a middle-aged man.
“When I was young all the football managers were straight, white, middle-aged blokes, so it’s fantastic to see how much things have changed,” she wrote.

In response to backlash, she called Clark a crossdresser, misgendered her, and said trans women are merely caricatures of cisgender women.

But honestly... the worlds most prominent TERF being a bigot to trans people is nothing new. Almost not even worth reporting on anymore except this time in order to try and dig her way out of the hole she dug for herself she has decided to be Racist as well. Because why not?

JK Rowling slammed for asking if she can be Black if she likes “Motown & fancy myself in cornrows”
By Alex Bollinger Monday, May 13, 2024

British author J.K. Rowling continued to battle with progressives on social media, asking those who oppose her transphobia whether she could call herself Black if she got into Motown music and wore her hair in cornrows.

Rowling, who has devoted most of her social media presence this past year to attacking transgender rights, wrote a post on X this past weekend calling a trans woman soccer manager a “middle-aged bloke.” The trans woman never even interacted with Rowling and did nothing to provoke her response and the ensuing harassment she received from Rowling’s millions of followers.

Rowling responded to her critics, saying that she was not “punching down” and called the trans woman a “crossdressing straight man.”

[...]

That’s when Rowling decided to compare being trans to blackface – an argument common to white anti-trans activists – and brought in some stereotypes of what it means to be Black.

“Does this apply to any other demographic, Landon?” Rowling asked. “Do I get to be black if I like Motown and fancy myself in cornrows? What if I claim the authentic me has always been black and that you’re being racist to me? Would that be OK, or would you find it ludicrous and deeply offensive?”

Apparently head TERF doesn't understand that that gender idenitity is rooted in biology, while racial idenitity is not. Not to mention other nuances that make the two completely different issues....

Surely no-one will continue to defend her and say she isn't a trans-antagonistic bigot right? RIGHT!???

...yeah I won't hold my breath either.

Transgender Surfer Wins Right to Compete in Women's Division in California

Transgender Surfer Wins Right to Compete in Women’s Division in California
The American Longboard Association reversed its decision, allowing transgender surfer Sasha Jane Lowerson to compete in the women’s division at the Huntington Beach Longboard Pro. This followed a directive from the California Coastal Commission, emphasizing non-discrimination based on gender. The controversy highlighted ongoing debates over fairness and inclusivity in sports, reflecting broader societal shifts toward recognizing and respecting gender diversity in competitive arenas.

In a significant turn of events that underscores the ongoing debate over transgender athletes’ rights in sports, the American Longboard Association has reversed its decision to bar transgender surfer Sasha Jane Lowerson from competing in the women’s division at the Huntington Beach Longboard Pro. This decision came after an initial exclusion that sparked widespread controversy and debate about the fairness and inclusivity of sporting competitions.

The controversy began when Todd Messick, the founder of the American Longboard Association, announced that Lowerson would not be allowed to compete against women in the event. This decision was met with significant backlash from both the public and regulatory bodies. Messick cited concerns about maintaining an “equal playing field,” but his stance led to heated discussions about gender discrimination and the rights of transgender athletes.

The California Coastal Commission quickly intervened, citing state laws that mandate inclusivity and non-discrimination based on gender. Their spokesperson, Joshua Smith, emphasized that surf contests in state waters must comply with these regulations or risk being shut down. This stance reflects California’s progressive approach to transgender rights, especially in public and sporting arenas.

Lowerson, originally from Australia, has been a competitive surfer who previously won competitions in the men’s division before transitioning. Her campaign for respect and inclusivity across athletic competitions and for transgender rights in sports has marked her journey. “It’s about style, flow, grace. As a longboarder, it’s more like ballet on a wave,” Lowerson described her sport, dismissing claims that transgender women might have unfair advantages in terms of strength.

Donald Trump says he'll revoke Joe Biden's protections for trans people 'on day one'
“We’re gonna end it on day one … the whole thing is crazy,” Trump said on a Philadelphia talk show.

If Donald Trump wins the presidency in November, he will reverse President Joe Biden’s transgender protections “on day one” of a new Trump administration, the Republican nominee said Friday.

Trump made the remark on Kayal & Company, a right-wing radio talk show in Philadelphia.

“The world is like a cuckoo’s nest right now,” he said, referring to “men playing in women’s sports,” among other transphobicthings.

Cohost Dawn Stensland raised the issue of “biological boys” in girls’ locker rooms as a result of the Biden administration’s recent rule on the enforcement of Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972, the law banning sex discrimination in federally funded educational programs.

The rule, which goes into effect August 1, states that sex discrimination includes discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity. It notes, among other provisions, that trans and nonbinary students have the right to go by their chosen pronouns and use the restrooms, locker rooms, and other facilities designated for their gender identity. Several Republican-led states have filed suit challenging the rule or vowed not to enforce it.

“We’re gonna end it on day one … the whole thing is crazy,” Trump said, and he told Stensland parents who’ve raised concerns about trans students in locker rooms needn’t be worried. Trump has often railed against trans rights and took many anti-trans actions during his presidency.

Target will only carry Pride gear in half its stores following last year's rightwing tantrum

Target will only carry Pride gear in half its stores following last year’s rightwing tantrum
The company will still sponsor Pride events across the country.
By Daniel Villarreal Friday, May 10, 2024

Target retail stores will only sell Pride-themed gear in about half of its estimated 1,897 stores across the U.S., following a conservative backlash against its LGBTQ+-themed clothing and products during Pride Month 2023.

Leaders of the Minneapolis-based national retailer are examining store-level data to determine which locations will carry the items, Bloomberg News reported. The company also said that it will have a presence at Pride events across the country this year.

In a statement to LGBTQ Nation, Target said, “Target is committed to supporting the LGBTQIA+ community during Pride Month and year-round. Most importantly, we want to create a welcoming and supportive environment for our LGBTQIA+ team members, which reflects our culture of care for the over 400,000 people who work at Target. We have long offered benefits and resources for the community, and we will have internal programs to celebrate Pride 2024.”

“Beyond our own teams, we will have a presence at local Pride events in Minneapolis and around the country, and we continue to support a number of LGBTQIA+ organizations. Additionally, we will offer a collection of Pride products, including adult apparel, home products, food, and beverages, which have been curated based on guest insights and consumer research. These items, starting at $3, will be available in select stores and on Target.com.”

The UK's new study on gender affirming care misses the mark in so many ways

[block quote] The UK’s new study on gender affirming care misses the mark in so many ways
It’s like the DeSantis administration wrote it.
By Henry Carnell Friday, May 10, 2024

Last month, the UK’s four-year-long review of medical interventions for transgender youth was published. The Cass Review, named after Hilary Cass, a retired pediatrician appointed by the National Health Service to lead the effort, found that “there is not a reliable evidence base” for gender-affirming medicine. As a result, the report concludes, trans minors should generally not be able to access hormone blockers or hormone replacement therapy (HRT) and instead should seek psychotherapy. While the review does not ban trans medical care, it comes concurrently with the NHS heavily restricting puberty blockers for trans youth.

The conclusions of the Cass Review differ from mainstream standards of care in the United States, which recommend medical interventions like blockers and HRT under certain circumstances and are informed by dozens of studies and backed by leading medical associations. The Cass Review won’t have an immediate impact on how gender medicine is practiced in the United States, but both Europe’s “gender critical” movement and the anti-trans movement here in the US cited the report as a win, claiming it is the proof they need to limit medical care for trans youth globally. Notable anti-trans group the Society for Evidence Based Gender Medicine called the report “a historic document the significance of which cannot be overstated,” and argued that “it now appears indisputable that the arc of history has bent in the direction of reversal of gender-affirming care worldwide.”

[…]

Despite all this, Cass’ systematic evidence reviews, used the “somewhat subjective”—as Turban puts it—Newcastle-Ottawa scale rating system to evaluate research on gender-affirming care. (More precisely, the review actually commissioned researchers at the University of York to conduct the ratings, which Cass then discusses at length in her own report). The Newcastle-Ottawa system allows reviewers to rate research on a scale from “low quality” to “high quality.” That sounds fine, except that high quality studies, according to the grading system, are almost always RCTs. This makes the scale inappropriate for use evaluating gender-affirming care. Outside of gender-affirming care, some researchers argue the scale is increasingly inappropriate because it is “outdated” and has “never been published in a peer-reviewed journal.” Cass categorically denies that the review “set a higher bar for evidence than would normally be expected.”

[…]

“It feels like a double standard to say, ‘Oh, there’s no evidence for medical and surgical interventions with regards to gender-affirming care or affirmation,’ but then, ‘Oh, let’s turn around and offer this other therapy that has absolutely no evidence,’” says Streed.

In a follow-up Q&A, Cass said she “believes that no LGBTQ+ group should be subjected to conversion practice.” At the same time, she stands behind her inclusion of exploratory therapies, saying, “young people with gender dysphoria may have a range of complex psychosocial challenges and/or mental health problems impacting on their gender-related distress. Exploration of these issues is essential.”

[…]

Further, experts note the report does not disclose all the people who collaborated on the project and their affiliations. Streed says, for similar reviews, “every author has to have their name on it and say what their conflicts of interests are, where they are getting their funding from. The Cass Report does not offer that information. For me, that is a big red flag.” Some of those connections have become clearer since the report was published. For example, the blog Growing Up Transgender uncovered a 2022 meeting between the US Department of Health and Human Services and the Society for Evidence-Based Gender Medicine, which the Southern Poverty Law Center has dubbed “the hub” of the “anti-LGBT pseudoscience network.” Representing SEGM were Richard Byng and R. Stephens, who were identified in the meeting as part of NHS’ “working group on Gender Dysphoria.”

Cass Says Transition Should Be Measured By "Employment," Not Satisfactio

Cass Says Transition Should Be Measured By “Employment," Not Satisfaction
Dr. Hillary Cass, author of the Cass Review gave an interview with NPR in which she says that transition effectiveness should be measured by "employment" and "getting out of the house."

ERIN REED
MAY 09, 2024

On Wednesday, Dr. Hillary Cass gave her first American interview with NPR about the Cass Review. The review, which appears heavily politicized and lends credence to debunked theories about being transgender, such as "social contagion," is being used as a pretext to ban care in the United Kingdom. In the interview, Cass called for "other ways" of managing dysphoria besides transitioning and blamed being trans on factors such as autism and pornography. However, one particular point of note was her response to a question about the evidence supporting gender-affirming care, where she suggested that the real measure of transition success should be the employment status of transgender people.

When asked about “actual outcomes” for the effectiveness of cross-sex hormones in transgender youth, Cass sated that there was a need for long followups to see if transgender people thrive on hormones, and that the outcomes that she was most interested in included employment, “getting out of the house,” and relationships. See her answer here:

CHAKRABARTI: Regarding cross sex hormones, the systematic review authors said there is a lack of high-quality research assessing the actual outcomes of cross sex hormones.

CASS: Yes, because we need to follow up for much longer than a year or two to know if you continue to thrive on those hormones in the longer term. And we also need to know, are those young people in relationships? Are they getting out of the house? Are they in employment? Do they have a satisfactory sex life?

It is important to note that all of these potential outcome measurements may be heavily influenced by transphobic sentiments in society. Should transgender people be judged on their ability to be "employed" or their willingness to "get out of the house," their own discrimination may then be used against their ability to access medication. According to the National Center for Transgender Equality, more than one in four transgender people have lost a job due to bias, and three-quarters report experiencing workplace discrimination. Therefore, it is inaccurate to blame transgender people and their medication for what appears to be an issue with societal discrimination.

In recent years, many reports have emerged showing high levels of satisfaction and low levels of detransition for transgender people. A recent report in the 2022 US transgender survey shows that out of 90,000 transgender people, less than 1% report feeling less satisfied after beginning gender affirming hormone therapy, with the vast majority feeling “a lot more satisfied.” Detransition appears to be similarly rare. One recent study out of Australia found complete data on 548 of 552 transgender patients and discovered only 1% of transgender youth detransitioned over several years before being transferred to adult services. Another study showed that transgender youth are stable in their gender identity 5 years after transitioning, with only 2.5% reidentifying as their assigned sex at birth. Even Cass’s own report found less than 10 detransitioners out of the 3,000 trans youth patients in England, which led to her claiming that the real reason she didn’t find more detransitioners is because adult clinics refused to provide private patient data.

If we are imagining theoretical amendments to change the court:

These are what I’d suggest

1) Every SC justice serves one AND ONLY ONE term.

2) Supreme Court terms last for a number of years equal to two times the total number of SC justices.

3) Terms are staggered such that a new judge would be appointed every 2 years with the appointment and confirmation of new judges being the very first thing congress must take up and finish before any other non-war time legislation.

4) Each judge must also nominate their own juniors (a first junior and a second) who would take their place should anything happen to the judge preventing them from doing their duties or finishing their term including death. These Juniors must be confirmed with the judge during the confirmation hearing. Should the first Junior have to permanently take over the term as the huge The first Junior is promoted to judge and the 2nd Junior is promoted to first Junior and the new judge must nominate a new second Junior.

5) Any judge that gets promoted to full judge is eligible for being nominated and appointed to a second term if and only if they served less than half of the original judge’s term.

6) The most senior judge on the SC would be the Supreme Justice with no judge allowed to take the position for more than one two year term.

7) Congress can void any ruling by the court if both houses can get a 55% majority vote and the president’s signature. OR a 60% majority vote of both houses. This is not a reversal so much as nullifying the ruling as though the case was never heard. The SC can rehear the case after two years time.

8) The president can force one case before the court of their choosing per year for a full hearing.

9) The court must decide on a code of ethics including situations where a judge must recuse themselves and situations warranting complete removal from the court by 2/3 or higher vote which must be approved by congress and the president before taking up any case.
- - -

Reason why I suggest these specific suggestions beyond getting rid of radicals:

Since there are currently 9 justices the term would be 18 years, and if increased to 11 justices then they would all serve 22 years meaning 4 years would be added to each judges term. This would give EVERY congress a say in shaping the court and result in a court more representative of the American people and their votes.

Every president would get two nominees per term preventing situations like we had were Trump (a one termer) got 3 picks, as did Obama despite serving TWO terms, and Carter getting no picks.

It would prevent the court from being drastically changed just because a justice died for whatever reason. The will of the people would remain.

It would also add more checks and balances to the SC by both congress and the president and create a code of ethics the court must abide by.

Texas Governor Greg Abbott Wants to "End" Trans People Being Allowed to Teach in Texas

Texas Governor Greg Abbott Wants to "End" Trans People Being Allowed to Teach in Texas
Abbott was speaking at a convention for the Young Conservatives of Texas when he made the statement, audio of which was later shared on X.

The right continues to make the classroom a battleground for trans rights.

While speaking to a group of young conservatives on Friday, Texas Governor Greg Abbott told attendees that he would like to limit the expression of transgender teachers in the classroom, according to audio shared online by Texas Observer reporter Steven Monacelli. To make his point, Abbott told attendees at the Young Conservatives of Texas convention a story about a teacher in Lewisville, Texas, who Abbott described as a “man who would go to school dressed as a woman in a dress, high heels, and makeup.”

Abbott appears to be referring to Rachmad Tjachyadi, who was a beloved teacher at Hebron High School in Lewisville, but resigned in March after being targeted online by Libs of TikTok for wearing a dress to a school spirit event. An investigation by the Lewisville Independent School District determined that Tjachyadi had not violated any district policies. But the science teacher resigned anyway, citing as a reason the “hateful comments” he received after the Libs of TikTok post and its subsequent backlash.

In his remarks, which misconstrued the situation surrounding Tjachyadi, Abbott continued, “What do you think is going through the mind of the students that’s in that classroom?,” he pondered out loud. “Are they focusing on the subject that this person is trying to teach?” After posing this hypothetical, Abbott said, “I don’t know.”

He then added, “What I do know are these two things: One is this person, a man, dressing as a woman, in a public high school in the state of Texas, he’s trying to normalize the concept that this type of behavior is OK. This type of behavior is not OK, and this is the type of behavior that we want to make sure we end in the state of Texas.”

What's in the Cass Report?

What’s in the Cass Report?
The final report of the Cass Review of gender-affirming care for youth is being taken as vindication from anti-trans activists.

by Evan Urquhart
Apr 15

In 2020, in the UK, in an atmosphere of increasing political anger and animosity directed at the transgender community, pediatrician Hilary Cass was tasked with reviewing the state of gender-affirming care for youth by the NHS. The Final Report of the Cass Review, released on April 9th, is a 388-page document that almost immediately became the center of gravity in the ongoing political debate about how and whether to treat young people with gender dysphoria. The Report made international news and has been taken as vindication by many anti-trans activists.

A document that approaches four hundred pages will be difficult for most people to read in full, meaning that inevitably most of the public will be forced to rely on summaries provided by journalists, commentators, activists, and others. This article seeks to provide a brief but comprehensive summary for Assigned Media’s audience.

The Cass Review vs the Cass Report

Dr. Cass served as the chair of the independent Cass Review and, for four years, sought data and information pertaining to the treatment of gender diverse children and adolescents in the NHS. While it is clear that others collaborated with Cass, and at least one member of the advisory board has been identified, it remains unclear who the board consisted of.

The Review comissioned a series of studies from the University of York, in England. These included systematic reviews of the evidence on treatments for gender dysphoria in youth, a survey of European youth gender clinics, an investigation of treatment guidelines, a quantitative study of the youth seen by the GIDS clinic in England, and a qualitative study of young people, parents, and clinicians’ attitudes and thoughts on treatment. The Report relies in part on this material, although it includes many other sources of information and in some places lapses into speculation with no clear evidentiary basis.
