SarahD's Journal"Hey kids! Pile into the station wagon. We're going to Mars!"
"Bring a jacket. I hear it's cold up there." The popular media publish many articles speculating about how soon we'll land on Mars, what we'll discover, how long we'll stay, and how much fun we'll have. But here's an article outlining the difficulties and cautioning that we may never get there at all. I suppose we have to forge ahead because the effort will enrich many people and satisfy the Star Trek fantasies of legions of nerds. Personally, I think we'll be too busy trying not to kill ourselves to make the trip.

Please don't make your animal buddy share your recklessness.
This is the guy who made the news a few days ago by running the Colorado River on a makeshift craft he called a raft. As expected, he died. The sad part is, he took his Corgi with him. Why he thought his dog would share his urge to commit suicide is a mystery. Dogs will go anywhere and do anything their humans ask. It's called trust. What this human did is a huge betrayal of that trust. If we cannot discourage people from suicide, I hope there's a way we can convince them to provide for their animal friends before they take the final step.

Is that a dog?
A miniature poodle won the big prize at the Westminster dog show. I like the big, friendly, goofy breeds and it makes me happy when a bloodhound or Newfoundland takes the top prize. The little ones are cute, but they don't seem loveable.
Florida Man in big trouble!
It's looking like the horrible Florida bus crash involved a drunk driver of a pickup truck. He should be sorry about the death and pain he caused. If not, he will be sorry about the legal troubles he faces.

New state flag not too bad.
The new flag is OK. At least they didn't include a motto. "Give me hockey or give me death."

Here comes fusion!
The thing that annoys me about the fusion hype is it's just an attempt to attract more research money. Of course, there is also the opportunity to sell shares to those foolish enough to believe a working fusion power plant is just around the corner. What we really need to do is face up to the challenges we are creating by committing to building new fission reactors. We are behind the curve in terms of infrastructure and financing. Unless we get up to speed, we're going to have a bunch of aging reactors suffering from shoddy maintenance, poor reliability, bankrupt investors, and poverty stricken rate payers. This already happened on a smaller scale, and it will happen again because we are about to forge ahead with something for which we are not ready. For those of you thinking we need to stop the nuke rush, forget it. It is going to happen. The promise of unlimited electrical energy is too much to resist. We are going to do this. We better get ready. Just ignore all this fusion hype and concentrate on the immediate challenge.

Dirty energy sector lied and greenwashed.
When I see the TV commercials bragging about how my favorite oil company proudly supports environmental programs, I wonder if it's true, false, so vague as to be meaningless. As you probably suspected, they spend less money doing some good and more money fooling us into thinking they're doing some good.

Here we go again with revised casualty numbers.
This is going to set off another endless round of arguing about numbers and various implications. I hope everyone remembers that the exact numbers, the credibility of their sources, how accurate they are, etc. does not change that people are dying on both sides.

"We have no evidence, but if we did..."
"It would be scientific and on our side." Raw milk advocates annoy me. They have no evidence for the supposed benefits. They call it fearmongering when actual science connects raw milk to various diseases. Then they propose that, if studies were done, they would be in their favor. I hesitate to propose that these people are endangering lives without any justification, but it sure looks that way to me.
