I found it fascinating that, when this story first broke, you basically had The Guardian on it and everything else I googled was from weeks ago (so it really didn’t address what had just happened). But by the end of the day? DAYUM! EVERYBODY’s on it! All writethrus were dated by so many HOURS ago, not weeks.

Having covered Hollywood when I was still working, I met a few actresses, and an actor or two, who could turn on the waterworks pretty much at will. It’s a gift. My best friend, also an actress, can do it. And it’s meant as a manipulation - to portray sadness or maybe manipulate one or two close up, to basically get the same kind of handling that Hope Hicks got after she crumbled on the witness stand. “Aw, poor little thing. She’s so upset. Can we take a break, your honor? Come on, Ms Hicks, let’s get you to a quiet room down the hall where you can regain your composure.”

The tipoff for me was how poised and in control she was during the defense questioning. But it seemed like only a minute or two into the cross examination that she went to pieces. When I heard that, I thought “gee, how convenient!” The cross examination was stopped cold, and I think that was it. I think it never picked back up and continued after she’d gotten a “time out.” They just let her take her leave, the poor little thing.
